FOCUS - Seeing Life Through a Biblical Lens

We live in a world that constantly fights for our attention.

Phones.

News.

Politics.

Fear.

Personal struggles.

Every day there are countless voices competing for our focus.

The enemy often does not need to destroy a believer. He only needs to distract them.

If he can shift our focus away from Christ, even slightly, he can weaken our peace, our witness, and our joy.

So the real question for us as followers of Jesus is this:

What are our eyes fixed on every day?

Scripture repeatedly calls believers to a very simple but powerful posture.

Fix your eyes on God.

Not fear.

Not distraction.

Not constantly analyzing the enemy.

But fixing our eyes on Christ.

Be Still Before God

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Before anything else, the first posture of a believer is stillness before God.

Not panic.

Not reaction.

Not anxiety.

Stillness.

When trials come, our instinct is often to react immediately. We want to fix the situation, understand it, or control the outcome.

But Scripture invites us to pause.

To remember who God is.

To remember who is actually in control.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do in a difficult moment is simply to stop and say:

“Lord… I know You are God.”

Stillness allows us to realign our hearts with the truth that God is sovereign over every circumstance.

Set Your Mind on Things Above

Colossians 3:2

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Our minds are constantly being pulled downward.

Earthly concerns.

Financial stress.

Relational struggles.

Social media noise.

Fear of the future.

But Scripture reminds us that our mindset must be trained upward.

This does not mean ignoring reality. It means seeing reality through God’s perspective.

Sometimes it helps to step back and look at our problems from what I like to call a 10,000 foot view.

Almost like asking:

How would Christ see this situation?

When we step back like that, many of our problems begin to shrink.

Not because they are unimportant.

But because God is bigger.

Seek First the Kingdom

Matthew 6:33

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Jesus spoke these words in the middle of a teaching about worry.

People worried about:

Food.

Clothing.

Daily provision.

Yet Jesus gave a powerful instruction:

Seek God’s kingdom first.

The order matters.

Not:

Handle life first, then seek God.

But:

Seek God first, and life will follow.

This has very practical implications for how we start our day.

If the first voices we hear every morning are:

News headlines.

Notifications.

Emails.

Social media.

Our focus is already scattered before the day even begins.

But imagine beginning the day with:

Prayer.

Scripture.

Stillness with God.

The direction of the entire day changes.

Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 12:2

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”

This verse carries an important reminder.

It does not say:

Fix your eyes on your problems.

Fix your eyes on spiritual warfare.

Fix your eyes on demons.

It says:

Fix your eyes on Jesus.

The enemy would love believers to spend all their energy analyzing darkness.

But Scripture tells us something different.

Light drives out darkness.

When our focus stays on Christ:

Peace grows.

Wisdom grows.

Discernment grows.

And the enemy loses influence.

Because our attention is not on him.

Think on What Is True

Philippians 4:8

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable… think about such things.”

Our thoughts shape our spiritual life.

If our minds are filled with:

Fear.

Anger.

Suspicion.

Negativity.

Our spiritual focus begins to drift.

But the apostle Paul encourages believers to train their minds.

To intentionally dwell on what reflects God’s truth.

When our thoughts align with God’s truth, our hearts begin to stabilize even in the middle of chaos.

Living This Out in Everyday Life

For Misty and I, this focus often shows up through our work.

We get to capture weddings through our business.

And weddings are not just events.

They reflect something sacred.

Marriage is God’s institution.

A covenant that reflects the relationship between Christ and His church.

Every wedding becomes an opportunity to:

Pray for couples.

Encourage vendors.

Show the love of Christ.

Plant seeds of truth.

Be the light of Christ.

Sometimes those seeds grow in ways we could never have expected.

One example is a DJ friend who was deeply involved in New Age beliefs. Over time, through conversations, friendship, and simply living out our faith, God began to work in her heart.

Today she is following Christ and attending church.

Not because of arguments or debates.

But because of consistent love and the light of Christ.

That is the power of living with the right focus.

When Trials Come

Trials will come.

But the believer’s first question should be:

Where is God in this?

Sometimes God allows difficult situations to:

Expose lies we believe.

Refine our faith.

Draw us closer to Him.

Teach us dependence.

Even when the enemy intends harm, God can turn it for good.

If we focus only on the problem, we may miss what God is doing.

But when we look to Him first, we begin to see His hand working in ways we did not expect.

Refocusing Our Lives

The Christian life is not about perfect performance.

It is about direction of focus.

Every day we choose where our eyes will rest.

On fear.

On problems.

On distractions.

Or on Christ.

When our focus stays on Him, something beautiful begins to happen.

Peace replaces anxiety.

Purpose replaces confusion.

Light replaces darkness.

And our lives begin to reflect the One we are looking at.

Prayer

Lord,

Help us fix our eyes on You.

When distractions come, bring our hearts back to Your presence.

When trials come, remind us that You are still in control.

Teach us to seek Your kingdom first and trust You with everything else.

May our lives reflect Your light so that others may see You through us.

In Jesus’ name… Amen. 🙏🏼
