When God Calls: Learning to Trust His Direction One Step at a Time
![]() |
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." — Proverbs 3:5-6
Have you ever felt like God might be calling you into something bigger, yet you weren't completely sure what to do next?
Perhaps it was a new job opportunity, a ministry assignment, a relationship, a move to a new city, or a step of faith that seemed impossible from a human perspective.
My wife and I have been walking through a season like that recently...Whe
Without getting lost in the details, God has been stirring conversations, opening our hearts to new possibilities, and reminding us that following Him often requires faith before we see the full picture.
As exciting as that sounds, it also raises an important question:
How do we know when something is truly from God?
God Still Leads His People
Throughout Scripture, we see God leading ordinary people into extraordinary journeys.
God called Abraham to leave his homeland without showing him the entire roadmap.
God called Moses to confront Pharaoh despite feeling unqualified.
God called Peter to step out of the boat and walk on water.
In every case, God did not reveal every detail upfront.
Instead, He asked for trust.
The same is true today.
While God may use dreams, conversations, Scripture, wise counsel, circumstances, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit, His desire is not simply to give us information... His desire is to deepen our relationship with Him. ☝️
Sometimes the greatest miracle is not the destination. It is learning to trust the One who leads us there.
Not Every Open Door Is God's Door
One lesson we have learned is that excitement alone is not confirmation.
A good opportunity does not automatically mean it is God's will.
At the same time, a difficult path does not automatically mean God is not in it.
This is why prayer is so important...
When seeking God's direction, we should ask:
- Does this align with Scripture?
- Does it draw us closer to Christ?
- Is there peace from the Holy Spirit?
- Is there wisdom from mature believers?
- Are doors opening naturally through God's provision?
God is not the author of confusion. He is faithful to guide those who sincerely seek Him.
Faith Is Not Recklessness
There is a difference between faith and presumption.
Faith says:
"God has spoken, and I will obey."
Presumption says:
"I will move ahead and expect God to bless my plans."
Many believers have inspiring testimonies of stepping out in faith and watching God provide in miraculous ways. Those testimonies encourage us, but they are not necessarily our instructions.
God may call one person to move across the country.
He may call another person to remain exactly where they are.
The goal is not to imitate another person's story.
The goal is to obey God's story for your life.
God Often Provides Direction Through Provision
One thing we know about our Heavenly Father is that He is a provider.
Jesus said:
📖 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." ~ Matthew 6:33
When God truly calls us somewhere, we can trust Him with the details.
That does not mean every step will be easy.
It does not mean there will never be uncertainty.
But it does mean we can trust that God sees what we cannot see.
He knows our needs before we ask.
He knows the people we will meet.
He knows the opportunities ahead.
He knows exactly how to get us where He wants us to be.
Don't Miss the Ministry Right in Front of You
Sometimes we become so focused on what God might be doing tomorrow or in the future, that we forget what He is doing today.
Whether you're a business owner, a stay-at-home parent, a student, a ministry leader, or someone simply trying to follow Jesus faithfully, God has already placed people in your path.
The cashier at the store.
The coworker at work.
The neighbor next door.
The client sitting across from you.
The family member who needs encouragement.
Our calling is not just about where we might go someday.
Our calling is also about being faithful where we are today.
Following Jesus One Step at a Time
The older I get, the more I realize that God's will is often less about knowing every detail and more about staying close to Him and trusting Him IN ALL THINGS...
Sometimes He gives us a clear answer immediately.
Sometimes He asks us to wait.
Sometimes He closes doors.
Sometimes He opens new ones.
But in every season, He remains faithful.
If you find yourself seeking direction today, know that you are not alone.
Keep praying.
Keep reading His Word.
Keep listening.
Keep obeying the last thing He clearly told you to do.
And trust that the Good Shepherd knows exactly how to lead His sheep.
The God who calls is also the God who guides.
And the God who guides is always faithful.
A Prayer for Direction
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a loving Father who guides Your children. Help us to trust You even when we cannot see the entire path ahead. Give us wisdom to discern Your voice above all others. Open the doors You want opened and close the doors You want closed.
Teach us to be faithful where we are while remaining willing to go wherever You lead. Strengthen our faith, increase our trust, and help us to walk in obedience to Jesus Christ every day.
May our lives bring glory to You and point others to the hope found in Your Son.
In Jesus' name,
Amen. 🙏🏼
