⚠️ Small business owners / PayPal users — has anything like this ever happened to you?
⚠️ Small business owners / PayPal users — has anything like this ever happened to you?
I’m genuinely curious because we just had a pretty shocking experience with PayPal.
Our small business, UnityREEL, has used PayPal for legitimate business transactions related to our photography and cinematography work. Recently, without any warning that we were aware of, PayPal permanently restricted our business account after what they described as an internal “risk assessment.”
The original notice simply told us they found “unusual activity” they could no longer support.
Naturally, I contacted PayPal because I wanted to know:
What unusual activity? What did we do? Was there a transaction we needed to explain? Was our account compromised?
After a lengthy conversation with their Account Limitations team, they told me they could not disclose the transactions, activity, indicators, or internal criteria that led to the decision. They also told me the decision was final and could no longer be appealed.
But then something even stranger came up.
The representative told me there was an unauthorized transaction case filed on August 4 involving someone named Carol Grosso for approximately $0.14.
Fourteen cents.
Here's the problem:
👉 We don't know Carol Grosso.
👉 We don't have a UnityREEL client/customer by that name.
👉 We don't recognize the transaction.
👉 Until this conversation with PayPal, we weren't even aware of what this was.
So I immediately told PayPal:
If there's activity on our account involving someone we don't recognize, can you please investigate it?
Their response was essentially that because our account had already been permanently restricted, they could not initiate another investigation, security review, escalation, or account-level action.
They did agree to document that we do not recognize the individual or the associated transaction.
To be very clear, I do not know whether this $0.14 case had anything to do with PayPal's decision. PayPal specifically would not confirm or deny that, and I don't want to speculate or accuse anyone of anything.
That's actually part of what makes this so frustrating.
We're simply trying to understand what happened to our business account and whether potentially unrecognized activity occurred on it.
PayPal is also currently holding $241.25 from our account for up to 120 days, with withdrawal eligibility expected to be reviewed on or after December 19.
I'm sharing this because I'd really like to hear from other small business owners, photographers, filmmakers, wedding professionals, freelancers, or regular PayPal users:
Has PayPal ever permanently restricted your account without telling you specifically why?
Were you able to get the decision reviewed or reversed?
Did you ever encounter an unknown transaction or unauthorized-transaction claim associated with your account?
If you successfully escalated something like this beyond normal customer support, what worked?
I'm not posting this to bash anyone. I genuinely want to understand what happened, protect our business, and hopefully learn from others who may have experienced something similar.
If you've been through this, I'd really appreciate hearing your experience. 🙏🏽
Small business owners especially — this is the kind of thing I think we need to talk about because payment processors are such an important part of how we operate.
